| He was the founder of Lord's cricket Ground but was born right here
in Thirsk on November 23rd, 1755. His house at 14/16 Kirkgate now houses
the Tourist Information Centre and Thirsk Museum. He was the son of a
once prosperous farmer.
By the time Thomas came along the family fortune had all but dwindled due to his father's financial aid to the Jacobite rebellion of the Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. As it failed the Lord family lands were confiscated. The family thus moved to Diss in Norfolk when Thomas was aged five. Later he became a professional cricketer in London. Progressing into the setting up of sports grounds he was invited to set up his own in Dorset Square, London in 1787. This was the first "Lord's Cricket Ground". This was moved to its present site in St. John's Wood in 1814. Lord died in Hampshire on January 13th 1832.
