I am looking for descendants of Sir Henry Temple, baronet of Thirsk. He was the grandfather of my great grandmother. |
|
I lived in Hambleton Thirsk for most of my life. Im only 24 yrs old but i hold a lot of fond memories from my time there. All of my family and friends are still there. Many know my mother Petra Kirk, shes the life of the party! My boyfriend Graham lives there also and Ii'm hoping to move back soon. Ihave been away for about 7 yrs now and miss it dearly. its slower pace but that is what makes it so great. the USA is so hecktic and no one takes time to say hello on the street like they do in Thirsk. Thirsk is a wonderful place to visit if you arelooking for peace and quiet or a night out. Michelle Thompson: mail

| Hello Residents of Thirsk. Thought I'd let
you know how much I enjoyed visiting the web site. It made me feel as
if I was coming home, since the first of my Ancestors to come to North
America lived at Thirsk after leaving Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. He became a
Member of The Society Of Friends (Quakers) in 1703 and then left for America.
he spent some time in Dublins where he met and married his first wife.
If anyone can help me find any info about him I would appreciate it very
much. His name is: John Widdifield Thank you very much and, A MERRY CHRISTMAS
TO ALL Lloyd Widdifield Lloyd Widdifield Sr.(Email me) |

Just browsing on my P C when I found Thirsks web site. Iloved reading the coomment of the expatriots and although I am not strictly an expatriot I felt that I would like to put in my Ha'pth. Iwas born in Thirsk in 1916, In Jackson's Yard, Long Street, I think. Lived in Spittle Hill till I was 5. Did'nt like walking the 2 miles to school, buut then we moved to a cottage next door to the Greyhound Inn in Bagby. Mrs brown was landlady. Like one of your earlier writers I too enjoyed?? potato picking and singling Sugarbeet for 3 farthings an hour, Well remember the weekends Going on the byke to Sutton Bank and thWhite Horse Kilburn. We used to help to launch the gliders by catapult. It was great fun to be tossed aside by the elastic rope when the pilot yelled 'RELEASE' and the plane shot over us missing by inches. I left Thirsh in 1935 to join thr Royal Navy then after 27 years I moved to Leeds . Now I visit Thirsk and district frequently. Like the way the old market was recobbled. I miss the Milk Bar, an aunt of mine was manager there once. Thanks to sponcers of your web site. I will keep a close watch. yours Les Lowther Many years ago. I went to school in Bagby near
Thirsk. There, I had a very good pal. He went on to Thirsk Secondary
School. I went to work. any how we lost touch. His name is Richard Palmer.
I hope he reads your notices. I'd love to contact him |

Hello to everyone in Thirsk, especially to anyone
that remembers me.Lately Thirsk has been on my mind, hence my visit to
this site. I used to live in the Norby Estate and went to Thirsk Grammer
and Modern School where I grad in 1968, like the lady above I have many
fond memories of childhood there including the spud picking etc, also
I used to work the summers in the market garden (back of Bells and Norby
Estate)I seem to remember long hot summers, swimming in the beck, taking
all creatures found round to James herriots(or should I say Mr.White,
thats how I knew him back then)Also a big hello to my fav employer Ann
Swales(nee Allenby)who took us kids on to help deliver the milk, and
then treated us to slap up meal on Fridays down at the local chinese.
Well I am hoping to visit Thirsk this summer and would love to hear
from anyone who remembers me |

Hello! I am writing from Colorado, USA. I was born near Ripon and my parents moved to Thirsk when I was quite small. I remember going to the Infant's School in Finkle Street, then another school, Long Street? Then, Thirsk Grammar Modern. It was a long walk from where I lived at 74 Hambleton Avenue. I have lived abroad since 1969! Wondering if you could get me the name of the local newspaper. Would love to write an article - especially about my memories of the Monday Market, the Milk Bar, the Sat. night dances at the town hall, and the horse chestnut trees near Squire Hall's place. Went paper picking at the race track and also potato picking as a kid. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Lynne Dolan (nee Burton) |
| I spent the
happiest days of my schooling at Breckenbrough Hall School. In my last
year at school I had a part time job at Green's Garage. My memories of
Thirsk and the people that lived there in the first five years of the
sixties will always bring feelings of warmth to my heart. Friendly, warm
and welcoming to those who held out a hand of honest friendship. Even
trips to the dentist were not to be feared. His Surgery looked don into
the square , from memory. I will always hold Thirsk as a dear memory,
and I say , rather belatedly, THANKYOU ALL. Grahame

I'm now resident in the United States, but will be visiting the UK in
November, and would really love to make contact with them. Can you help??
